In the weeks leading up to a person\u2019s period, PMS may cause bloating, cramps, breast tenderness, and headaches. Those with PMDD may experience these symptoms as well as more severe mood changes including anxiety, depression, and irritability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is PMDD?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is similar to PMS but is a more serious condition that\u2019s considered to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/blog\/take-a-quick-depression-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the fields of medicine and mental health. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statpearls.com\/articlelibrary\/viewarticle\/27663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70-90% of women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in child-bearing age report experiencing PMS symptoms, about 3-8% of women experience symptoms that would qualify them for a diagnosis of PMDD. This is about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecoveryvillage.com\/mental-health\/pmdd\/pmdd-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What causes premenstrual dysphoric disorder?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that changes in hormonal and serotonin levels may play a role in the development of PMDD symptoms. As the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/9132-premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreasing levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones after ovulation and before menstruation may trigger symptoms. Serotonin, a brain chemical that regulates mood, hunger and sleep, may also play a role. Serotonin levels, like hormone levels, change throughout your menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>PMDD vs. PMS symptoms<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of PMDD and PMS usually occur in the days leading up to a women\u2019s period and resolve a few days after menstruation begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/menstrual-cycle\/premenstrual-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>PMS symptoms<\/b><\/a><b> include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen or tender breasts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation or diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache or muscle aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clumsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower tolerance for noise or light<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite changes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble with concentration or memory<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression, feelings of sadness, or crying spells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less interest in sex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/menstrual-cycle\/premenstrual-syndrome\/premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>PMDD symptoms<\/b><\/a><b> include the symptoms mentioned above, and may also include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anger or irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of sadness or despair, or thoughts of suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe feelings of anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of interest in usual activities and relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling out of control<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though more people are gaining awareness of PMDD, many women may not know to speak to a mental health professional or doctor about their symptoms. They\u2019ll also listen to your concerns and answer any questions that you have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of a diagnosis, you may be asked to track your symptoms over time. Because PMDD symptoms appear and subside on a monthly basis, this is important for a diagnosis. Your provider will then evaluate your symptoms and consider whether you may be experiencing PMDD or another anxiety or depression-related condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Treatment for PMDD<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMDD is treatable, so talk to a healthcare provider so you can start feeling like yourself again and enjoy life more fully.
