Doctors and researchers are continually learning new things about mental illness, testing hypotheses, and performing clinical tests. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/looking-at-my-genes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Mental Healt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h says, \u201cResearch conducted and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has found that many mental disorders are caused by a combination of biological, environmental, psychological, and genetic factors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that, to date, there is no single genetic test that can determine your genetic risk factors for mental illness. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/looking-at-my-genes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that your family history will tell you more than any genetic testing can, as \u201cno gene variant can predict with certainty that a person will develop a mental disorder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Mental Illnesses are Hereditary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have known for a long time that some mental illnesses are hereditary, and are passed down from generation to generation. Other mental health concerns seem to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12888-019-2278-1#:~:text=Past%20research%20has%20established%20the,present%20with%20similar%20problems%20themselves.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intergenerational<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with siblings sharing common diagnoses, especially if their parents have mental health problems as well. Simply put, some mental illnesses run in families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, researchers are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/common-genetic-factors-found-5-mental-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> studying the genetic roots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of mental illnesses including\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major depressive disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, several developmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism appear to haver a genetic component in nature as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we stated above, however, not every child whose parent has a mental illness will share the diagnosis. As Dr. Allen Frances wrote for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/saving-normal\/201604\/what-you-need-know-about-the-genetics-mental-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cHaving a close relative with a psychiatric disorder is usually the most predictable risk factor for developing that disorder yourself, but the relationship is not inevitable. Even identical twins (who have identical genes) as often as not do not develop the same psychiatric disorder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While evidence that mental illness is hereditary is statistically significant, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/common-genetic-factors-found-5-mental-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jordan Smoller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that \u201ceach of these genetic associations individually can account for only a small amount of risk for mental illness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Mental Illnesses are Environmental<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If heredity and genetics can\u2019t account for all instances of mental illness, then there must be other factors that contribute. There is ample evidence that environmental factors play a vital role in the development of some mental illness. These factors may include (but are not limited to)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neglect\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poverty<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of a parent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural disasters or health epidemics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any of these factors can potentially contribute to mental health problems, such as<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These factors may exacerbate hereditary mental illness proclivities as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Mental Illnesses are Caused by a Mix of Things<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we stated above, most of the time mental illness is caused by a variety of factors working together. These might include biological factors such as a hormonal imbalance, environmental factors such as a traumatic brain injury or exposure to toxins. Or they might include a combination of all of these factors with genetics in the mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On our blog, for example, we\u2019ve discussed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/blog\/anxiety-and-the-brain-how-do-they-relate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study involving fMRI brain scans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people who recently experienced a traumatic event. The study \u201c found differences in brain activity related to mental health symptoms. Participants with brain activity categorized as reactive\/disinhibited (high activity related to both a threat and reward) had more symptoms of both PTSD and anxiety over the six-month follow-up period compared to people with different brain activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this study alone, you can get a sense for how complex the factors that cause mental illness can be. There simply is no single cause. Some piece of mental illness is hereditary in some cases, but as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/saving-normal\/201604\/what-you-need-know-about-the-genetics-mental-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Allen Frances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concludes \u201cRight now, genetic studies give us an early insight into interacting dimensions of illness that are influenced not just by genes, but by interactions of genes with regulatory components, experience, and the actual illness and its treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even Hereditary Mental Illnesses Can Be Treated<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last point Dr. Frances made above is quite significant. Treatment for mental illness can change the course of the disease, even if the cause IS hereditary. No matter if you have family members with the same genetic variation that causes a mental health disorder, treatment can make a huge difference in the trajectory of your own disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapy <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the perfect option. The help to understand what you are feeling, and what contributes to it, and to find strategies to work through those feelings and experiences can be a substantial mechanism to effective treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For others, mental health treatment may require <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under supervision from a psychiatric provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many individuals, treatment looks like some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/medication-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combination of therapy and medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, optimized by and supervised by highly trained professionals.
